Career arc
Company story · 2015 – 2016

At HP and HPE I brought design thinking and a UX Center of Excellence into Global IT while the company split in two.

I worked in HP's IT organization as it split into two Fortune 50 companies, first as a value designer in Enterprise Services IT and then in the Global IT UX/UI Center of Excellence. I started by running research for my own group and ended by co-developing the service offerings, training and design engagements that taught IT teams to work with design thinking. The pattern was the same each time: find the research or workshop that gets a group to a shared view fast, then turn it into something other teams can run without me.

The business I came into

HP was separating into two Fortune 50 companies, HP Inc. and Hewlett Packard Enterprise. IT had to realign its strategy, governance and operating models to support both while keeping services running. My first team was Business Engagement & Strategy in Enterprise Services IT.

The role I was hired for

I came in as a value designer. The job was to build up the value management function with a creative focus, which in my first year meant user research, a planning framework for IT leadership, success stories and design thinking training for peers.

What I carried forward

At HP I learned that a shared method does more than a good deck. Design thinking and Lean Startup gave IT teams a common language, a fast synthesis could change what a business partner chose to research, and a Center of Excellence only works when other teams can run its tools without you. I took those three ideas into every job after it.
